Life is crazy. I mean for us, one minute we owned a successful restaurant – hardly saw husband and often when we did, he was exhausted and were completely ingrained in the dull day to day mundane…. Then came the opportunity to sell out – well that’s the next mind game. Do we sell – it wasn’t the dollars we were expecting – what will we do next – is this the right decision – are we ready for the next chapter? All questions we did not know the answer to. Cue anxiety and self worth issues and insecurities.
Well, we did decide to sell – cue COVID! Settlement was on the Monday Vic first went into lockdown. We spent the weekend convincing ourselves that the sale would not go through but alas on Monday – the new owners were there with the cheque (which we ran to the bank) excited and enthusiastic – even with the uncertainties. I’m also very happy to say that our old restaurant smashed it during COVID – well as much of a smash as could be!
We always planned as soon as we sell out of the business, we would move to Byron Bay. We were excited at the prospect and thought finally we could our achieve our five year plan we planned 10 years ago…
Apparently the Premiers of Australia had other ideas… with Vic getting more COVID cases by the day, our dream of finally moving interstate was suddenly dashed…. We spent the next 8 months planning, packing (yes – the longest house pack down ever!) and actually enjoying each other and reconnecting as a family. Don’t get me wrong – lockdown was tough and dark and I hope to never have to do that again however we did have a silver lining.
We pre-empted the lockdown border closures between Victoria and NSW and booked our removalists in. All the stars seemed to be aligning which I thank our angels for helping this through.
We moved to Byron Bay in a property we bought many years ago and decided to slow down and get back to the basics of enjoying each other and life.
All of sudden, we’re both working full time hours and can feel the stress and negative emotions creep back in. It’s easy to slip back into negative patterns that do not serve us but we feel an obligation to.
We know if we maintain balance and keep perspective, our life in Byron will be very different to the one we had in Mornington. Sure, we don’t have our family or lifelong friends here, but we knew that when we embarked on this journey.
For us – it’s about staying true to the journey, realise and be open to life’s lessons when they appear and to accept change. Sometimes it’s easy and sometimes it’s really hard to listen, accept and acknowledge. However, by doing so – you’re saying to the universe “let’s go with it” – not against it. And it’s amazing to see what doors and choices open up for you when you’re in this mindset.
Create your own journey – put it out into the universe and be ready for change. Be brave and embrace life. As our nearly 8 year old would say, “step out and enjoy the world”.
